we are
Born out of Platt Fields Market Garden in Manchester, we are a not-for-profit sustainable café and caterers supporting growing communities around good food. We support local growers and suppliers by serving up the best of British seasonal produce.
We demonstrate an alternative way to provide good food, focused on sustainable, ethical, locally-grown, seasonal produce. We’re giving people and organisations in Greater Manchester the choice to eat food they know is produced in a way that nurtures the soil it’s grown on, the environment, and the people who grow it.
We adapt our menu with the seasons, using the local produce that is fresh, and in season when you buy it, showcasing just how delicious it can be. All the produce we use is grown organically on the two market gardens run by our sister organisation, Manchester Urban Diggers CIC, or sourced from local Organic farms by Organic North Wholesale. This means we are supporting people in our community to grow sustainable food, regenerating the environment and supporting the green economy locally.
All our profits go back into MUD, a Community Interest Company working to transform the local food system. MUD transform disused urban green spaces into thriving community market gardens, growing food, regenerating the environment, and using horticulture and food to improve people’s wellbeing and bring communities together. This way, every sarnie you buy directly supports a better food system and strengthens local communities around Manchester.

About MUD Kitchen
MUD Kitchen is redefining what it means to cater events in Manchester. We combine radical creativity with purpose-driven professionalism to deliver sustainable, locally-sourced catering that makes a statement—on taste, on ethics, and on the planet.
We work with businesses, organisations, and communities across Greater Manchester to design catering that is thoughtful, innovative, and zero-compromise. Every menu is crafted around seasonal British produce, ethically sourced from local growers and our sister market gardens. But our focus goes beyond ingredients: we aim to transform the catering experience itself, proving that responsible food can be exceptional food.
From corporate meetings to conferences, weddings to bespoke events, MUD Kitchen brings a fresh perspective to every occasion. Our team thrives on problem-solving, creativity, and attention to detail, delivering catering that is as visually striking as it is sustainably-minded. We challenge convention, replacing the standard, wasteful approach with an innovative model that prioritises people, planet, and flavour in equal measure.
Our ethos is simple: sustainability is non-negotiable. We minimise waste, champion plant-forward menus, and support a circular, ethical food system across Manchester. Each event we cater is an opportunity to demonstrate that good food can be purposeful, inspiring, and impactful.
At MUD Kitchen, we are not just caterers—we are collaborators with our clients, partners, and local community. By choosing us, organisations join a movement that celebrates sustainable, ethical food, strengthens local economies, and sets a new standard for catering across Greater Manchester.
Our Story
In 2020 when the pandemic started MUD was selling fresh produce (fruit & veg) at our stall at PFMG. However our love of food didn’t just stop at growing, we also loved cooking and eating it and with Jo’s many years of hospitality experience, we decided to diversify what we were selling. The mini, weekly market stall grew rapidly in popularity during lockdown for several reasons;
A place for people to pick up their groceries outdoors when many felt unsafe going into supermarkets
Being on a local green space and a good reason for people to get out of the house whilst getting groceries and a coffee.
High quality, local & organic produce
The MUD Kitchen started when we began offering coffee & cakes alongside our veg, this evolved to soup, then to other baked goods such as pasties & farinatas etc.
As the kitchen operation grew, we developed the values that we aspire to; seasonal, local ingredients, ingredients from the market garden, comfort food. These values represent MUD and formed an important route to market for the produce we were growing.
When the lockdown was over and people were allowed to visit cafes & restaurants again after the pandemic, our veg box scheme, veg stall sales and kitchen sales all took a drop in revenue likely due to the competition opening up again. This was most apparent during the winter months of 2021 as people chose to go to mainly indoor spaces to eat, drink & shop. It was at this point we entered the world of catering!
